Chapter 5: Navigation Rules

Navigation Rules: Power Driven Vessel and Sailing Vessel

The rules are a bit different whenever a power-driven vessel approaches a sailing vessel. Whenever a power-driven vessel and a sailing vessel approach one another, the sailing vessel is always the stand-on vessel, meaning it has the right of way. The only situation where a sailing vessel will be a give-way vessel is when it's overtaking a power-vessel. Sailing vessels always give-way when overtaking and stand-on, if being overtaken.

Power Driven Vessel and Sailing Vessel

So, in this example, Vessel B is power-driven and is approaching Vessel A which is a sailing vessel. Vessel B is the give-way vessel. So, it must take action to keep clear of Vessel A.
