Chapter 7: Water Cleanliness and Small Vessels

The Waste Management Plan

Waste Management Plan

If a vessel exceeds 40 feet in length, has a galley and berth, and is certified to operate beyond three nautical miles from shore, one is required to keep a Waste Management Plan on board. The boat's captain is responsible for the creation and implementation of this plan.

A Waste Management Plan gives directions to passengers and crew about how to properly dispose of garbage, food waste, glass, plastics, and aluminum, sewage, and hazardous waste.

The plan should also have a clear procedure to prevent and report any possible oil and gasoline spills.
