Chapter 7: Water Cleanliness and Small Vessels

Towing Safety Signals

The operator, towed passenger and observer all need to be able to communicate efficiently over the roar of the engine. To achieve this, one will have to learn and make use of several visual hand signals.

If one is being towed, use these hand signals to communicate with the observer and boat operator.

Skier Fallen

Skier Fallen Signal

If one falls, one should hold up a ski to signal that one is off the skies and in the water.

Skier is Okay

Skier is Okay Signal

Clasp both hands over your head. This signals that you are okay.

Back to Shore

Back to Shore Signal

Pat your hand on your head to signal that you want to return to shore.

Speed is OK

Speed is OK Signal

An "OK" signal will signal the boat operator that the current speed is fine.

Reduce Speed

Reduce Speed Signal

A thumbs-down signal will signal the boat operator that you want to slow down.

Increase Speed

Increase Speed Signal

A thumbs-up will signal the boat operator that you want to go faster.

Turn Left

Turn Left Signal

Extending the left hand straight out to the side will signal that you want the boat operator to make a left turn.

Turn Right

Turn Right Signal

Extending the right hand straight out signals that you want the boat operator to make a right turn.

Stop

Stop Signal

Putting the palm of the hand out towards the boat will signal that you want the boat operator to stop the engine.
